2.6.24 and possibly 2.6.23 have the p54 driver that supports the isl3886
driver; any chance you could try that instead of ndiswrapper and see if
the results are any better?

Can you post the command line you're using to invoke wpa_supplicant?
What wpa_supplicant driver are you using?  Are you adding "-ddd" to get
maximum debuginfo?
