Michael,

I thought I would post in case you're still having trouble with this.

I don't know exactly *what* the problem was, but I upgraded my 
gentoo-based kernel from 2.6.12-gentoo-r4 to 2.6.13-gentoo-r3 and now it 
just... works.  Same hostap version (rebuilt for the new kernel, of 
course), same pcmcia-cs tools revision.  My pcmcia drivers have been 
compiled into the kernel (not as modules) all along.

What is weird is that I have two other 16-bit pcmcia cards and they both 
worked flawlessly with this "older" kernel; that's why kernel 
upgrade/pcmcia kernel drivers were the last thing I thought of.
