if PA is hidden and client cannot see AP's ssid, what should put for wpa_passphrase?

Dan,
   
  If I put authentication as auto which disable wpa in madwifi, ping works.
  But if I put auth mode as WPA, ping does not work.
   
  command is
  iwpriv ifname authmdoe 4 ----auto
  iwpriv ifname authmode 5 --- wpa.
   
  What difference between auto and wpa?

You just have to know the SSID, even if the AP is hidden. You cannot
connect to a hidden AP unless you know the SSID, so you'll have the SSID
for the passphrase anyway.
