bouncing connection using v0.4.4, madwifi and a BEFW11S4 router

I'm using wpa_supplicant v0.4.4, madwifi, and a Linksys BEFW11S4
(Firmware Version: 1.50.14) router.
Connecting to the router in Windows is no problem.
Using wpa_supplicant with debugging turned on gives the following
bouncing connection - it connects and associates for a moment, then
disassociates.
wpa_supplicant.conf has been checked - the essid and psk is correct.
I've heard this particular router to be a pain, but I was wondering if
there's any hints you could give to help me on my way to WPA
shangri-la.
