No network access if bitrate is set

Hi

Has anybody else problems with setting bitrate other than auto?
If I set bitrate explicitly after starting hostapd or wpa_supplicant I 
cannot
use the network even authentication is done  i.e. nor ping nor nothing 
else works.
I use hostapd-0.4.3 and madwifi-20050702.
And if I set the bitrate before starting device it doesn't work because
madwifi-driver or hostapd/wpa_supplicant set it back to auto.

This is recconect aftre setting bitrate to say 18M.

If I set it back to auto it works again.

Any ideas?
