madwifi problems..

I can associate with network

network={
	ssid="dunf1"
	key_mgmt=NONE
}

when I specify -Dwext (i.e driver is wext) 

    wpa_supplicant -ddd -iath0 -cwpa1.conf -D wext 

and also when I simply do (ifconfig ath0 down, ifconfig ath0 up) 

but not when I specify -Dmadwifi,
any ideas on this? trying to get basic operation of wpa_supplicant before
attempting WPA_PSK...

network={
        ssid="dunf1"
	proto=WPA2
	key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
	psk=0102030405060708090001020304050607080900010203040506070809000102
}

which works with neither..
