Hostapd + madwifi problems

Hi,

I am trying to set up an AP using a Debian based system with a D-Link DWL-G520 
NIC (AR5212 chip). I tried different versions of the madwifi-drivers with the 
hostapd packet from debian (version 0.3.7-2), but without success. When I 
start the daemon with 

hostapd -d /etc/hostapd/hostapd.conf

and start looking for WLANs from my laptop using wifiscanner, I can see 
something like the following. The essid of the madwifi-AP is "madwifi", there 
are BEACON frames as like for the other WLANs around here, but the AP is not 
shown in the AP-list below. I also wonder if there should be additional 
wireless interfaces come up when starting hostapd (just like with a PRISM 
card and hostap-driver, where you have wlan0ap for example)? I just have ath0 
all the time..!?

Today I compiled hostapd from source with madwifi support and nothing other. 
The compiler complained about several things in the madwifi-source until I 
used an older version (I took the cvs-version from 2005/04/30). But the 
result is the same, the AP is not shown in the list.

It would be great if anyone had an idea what's wrong here...
