What do you need it to do?  If it is just sharing an internet 
connection, you can buy a little router from futureshop/bestbuy/etc. 
that will handle that functionality.

If you want to do web serving, mail, ftp, other such services, these are 
items that regularly need security updating (so it seems).  So its a 
moving target, you need to "keep up" with development efforts to a 
certain extent.

Are you having actual hardware problems?  Other than the disk drive, I'm 
not aware of any other parts that seem to "wear out" over time...
