Komuro-san very very kindly provided me with a new kernel object. When forced with modprobe, it makes cardmgr work and from there everything, including the 3c589 card, runs. I did need to do an ipconfig ... up down to get the card to turn on, but that seems to be a known feature. So, congrats to all who helped, but most of all to Komuro.
