Changing the configure behaviour might be one way to do it, but then you
might suddenly get all different reports depending how packagers build
libical. I realy think we need to find a smarter way out of this situation. 

How'bout registering an error handler that would be called instead of
barfing? The application (be it server or client) could then decide what to
do with this error message and, in this errormessage a backtrace, if you
enable it.
