front end and back end state machine

Does any one know if there is a document about the  Supplicant PAE state
machine and Supplicant Backend state machine in eapol_sm.c? For another
statemachine, the EAP state machine, I can find it defined in RFC 4137.
But I can't find more information about these PAE state machines.
