I believe the rationale, and this seems perfectly logical to me, is
that each program should do one single task and do it well.

get_iplayer is for getting content from BBC Iplayer.

Converting the content from one format to another is not what this
program is designed for, nor where its development should be focused.
That is the job of another program, which can do that job and do it
well. If these features can be removed from gip there is less code to
maintain, and the code that is left is actually about getting from
iplayer.

You may find the Unix Philosophy [1] interesting reading for the
rationale behind this approach.

Of course, this is just my interpretation, and not what may actually
be dinkypumpkin's reasoning.
