Thanks Vangelis for the explanation.

For the benefit of others who are considering the option of using
get_iplayer 2.95 I ran a test of a download of The Voice Semi Final -
2 files one HLSHD (2.2 GB filesize) and the other HVFHD (4.4 GB)
modes.

To my eyes, (and bear in mind I was unable to perform a side by side
test which is really what is required here to perform a true test),
there was no noticeable improvement in quality from HVFHD mode - it
had the same image flaws and the image wasn't a higher resolution (was
not sharper).

In fact I was quite disappointed by the lack of improvement from the
BBC in this regard, I had hoped they were moving towards higher
resolution online for iplayer. The HVFHD file was 50 fps but still 720
lines.

Worth noting, the conversion failed on the HVFHD file, but I was still
able to play the ts file.
