If cost is overriding consideration, also check flights to
Manchester. [Manchester<->Canada was similar to Amsterdam<-> Canada
for me this year.]

Cheapest from LHR is on the Underground into central London.
[Buy a prepaid Oyster Card to pay for the tickets, then return it
and get your deposit back before leaving the country.]

Heathrow Express fastest but costs much more.

Weekday tickets generally cheaper after around 9.30am, so for
longer journeys starting before then, get separate (expensive) ticket
to first station where train stops after 9.30 then cheaper ticket for rest.
Returns generally much cheaper than 2 singles, but 2 singles
can work out cheaper e.g. if one is peak the other off-peak.
Always possess ticket (or else explain why not to the guard) before
boarding train.
If Cambridge is chosen, can write specific information and customise
for particular travellers if necessary. [I do this for some UKUUG
speakers - print this out and show it to people if you need help etc.]
