2.6.14-gentoo-r5 Yenta socket not identifying WPC11 v3

Oh yeah, after checking my kernel config, and recompiling it a few
times, I realized that pcmcia-socket-startup does not lock up the
system if the hermes/orinoco driver is not built at all (either module
or compiled in). Otherwise, the system just hangs and I have no way to
tell what is happening.
The Yenta driver is always compiled into the kernel, so that is not a problem.
