Ok, this is really unusual, but for the first time, running
pcmcia-socket-startup did not actually freeze my laptop. What I got
instead were the following lines in dmesg:

cs: IO port probe 0x100-0x3af: excluding 0x200-0x207 0x220-0x22f
0x330-0x337 0x388-0x38f
cs: IO port probe 0x3e0-0x4ff: clean.
cs: IO port probe 0x820-0x8ff: clean.
cs: IO port probe 0xc00-0xcf7: clean.
cs: IO port probe 0xa00-0xaff: clean.
cs: memory probe 0xa0000000-0xa0ffffff: clean.

Here is more info from pccardctl:

# pccardctl ident
Socket 0:
  product info: "The Linksys Group, Inc.", "Instant Wireless Network
PC Card", "ISL37300P", "RevA"
  manfid: 0x0274, 0x1613
  function: 6 (network)
# pccardctl info
PRODID_1="The Linksys Group, Inc."
PRODID_2="Instant Wireless Network PC Card"
PRODID_3="ISL37300P"
PRODID_4="RevA"
MANFID=0274,1613
FUNCID=6
# pccardctl status
Socket 0:
  5.0V 16-bit PC Card
  Subdevice 0 (function 0) [unbound]

However, iwconfig still does not see any wireless devices:

# iwconfig
eth0      no wireless extensions.

lo        no wireless extensions.

I'm wondering what to do now.
(BTW, I use UDEV)
