Xircom pcmcia CEM56 eth/modem combo works on thinkpad 390 but not 600

These machines are similar (P2, 266 to 300MHz), running 
2.6.13 and pcmciautils 005 or 010 (both same result)

The Xircom card is recognised, and will dhcp and phone out 
on the 390, but not on the 600. This is with the same 
harddisk being moved from one machine to the other and then 
rebooting, so presumably the problem is not due to the wrong 
software on one machine.

On the Thinkpad 600E I can't get the modem part to dial, and 
the ethernet part doesn't get a reply from dhcp. I can put 
an IP on the card with ifconfig, but the card doesn't get 
any replies to pings (I don't know if they're even sent 
out).

Both machines work OK with cardbus ethernet and wifi cards
and a pcmcia wifi card. Both are loading the Yenta driver.
