You use only one runlevel at the time. I assume you use X-widows, so 
your runlevel would be 5.

Ayt least you should check the pcmcia init script (in Fedora Core it is 
/etc/init.d/pcmcia) that is uses pcmcia not ds when it loads/unloads the 
pcmcia system.
