Thank you very very much. It works now.

So it was all my fault and none of the kernels. What a relief. I thought
cardmgr only loads correct modules when it detects a new card in a slot,
and that loading the module manually would do the same thing. Well, it
doesn't. (the USB drivers work like this, but well, USB isn't PCMCIA).
