I really need VIDEOMODE_HELPERS, not OF_VIDEOMODE. If I select only 
OF_VIDEOMODE, I still get the issue above.

Check drivers/gpu/drm/drm_modes.c , it's protected by CONFIG_VIDEOMODE_HELPERS
