It’s because you’re running on a single CPU (and hence have limited interrupt bandwidth) that servicing more buffers per interrupt might get you higher bandwidth.
And whether it’s terminating or transit traffic is less significant, though you’ll probably see more increase in transit traffic than terminating traffic.
