It is likely that you are missing the required kernel module packages, as they aren't installed by default. USB drives need at least kmod-usb-storage; less common hardware may also needs kmod-usb-storage-extras. There is also kmod-usb-gadget-mass-storage, which you could try if the other two packages don't work.
