Hammering servers isn't exactly a solution or are you trying to explain another issue? With some more logic the approach above could become very efficient as curl is smart enough to keep connections alive if you have urls in a list (ie generate a list of tarballs to download and tell curl to fetch it). The slowest part right now is to establish connections and after that comes slow servers. Keep in mind that very few tarballs are actually large, it's mostly rather small ones.
