Well i think this is a matter of perspective.
On the chipset driver developers view, Johns opinion is right.
But on the customers view (and here i mean professional customers, who wants access from the highest luci level down to the config file and the kernel messages) the port numbers should be consistent through the whole system.
The (end)user doesn't care about chipset related port assignments. If there is printed "Port 1" over a connector on the router case, than this port should be port 1 in the software, anywhere and anytime.
So I am still forced to use my patched version mentioned above here.
