I did try modifying that line but so far failed to achieve anything useful.

For clarity; my objection (and that of the original poster to the openWRT mailing list) is about all reference to these ports; from kernel messages detailing port up / down status, though setting up vlans via /etc/config/network and all the way to the GUI when used with LUCI.  

The reason I tagged it as kernel was that I thought the only place to fix it properly was changing how the kernel driver presents the view of the hardware to userspace.  I then googled it instead of doing it myself and found Martin Schiller had had a similar idea and actually done it, but couldn't see that it had got anywhere.
