Device not working in a bridge

I'm trying to configure hostapd on Debian Squeeze on AR9285 (ath9k) device
with nl80211 driver.

Whenever the wlan device is added to a bridge, it stops working properly,
_regardless of the `bridge` config parameter_.

In particular, it even fails to authenticate new clients, repeatedly
writing this to the log:

wlan3: STA 18:f4:6a:27:04:c9 IEEE 802.11: authenticated
wlan3: STA 18:f4:6a:27:04:c9 IEEE 802.11: associated (aid 1)
wlan3: STA 18:f4:6a:27:04:c9 IEEE 802.11: deauthenticated due to local
deauth request

(which is quite similar to what it writes if the passphrase on the client
is wrong).

What could be the source of that problem / how can it be fixed?
