Getting Atheros 5k to work with WPA in Ad-Hoc mode

Hi,
I'm currently trying to connect two boxes via wlan in ad-hoc mode,
which works fine as long as I use WEP:
iwconfig wlan1 mode ad-hoc
iwconfig wlan1 essid TemporaryHomeLan
iwconfig wlan1 key restricted
iwconfig wlan1 key DEADBEEF
ifconfig wlan1 up
on the linux box with a WPN311-card works fine, I can see and connect
to this machine from my Asus eee-pc and login via SSH to the linux box.
Trying the same with wpa_supplicant gives a rather flaky connection
and even if windows is showing 'connection established' for several
seconds in the connection manager, I get no response to my packets
whatsoever. Is WPA and Ad-Hoc mode supposed to work with
wpa_supplicant yet? Any ideas what might cause the radio silence with
wpa_supplicant?
Kernel is 2.6.30.5, some other useful info might be:
