packet flow with hostap

Hi,

I have been trying to figure out how the hostap driver works with
hostapd and I have a few questions:

1. The hostap driver uses its own 802.11 implementation, and the
mac80211 code is and extension of this 802.11 implementation. Is this
correct?

2. The diffrent drivers in hostapd, say driver_madwifi .. , have
diffrent number of callbacks registerd with the driver_ops strucutre?
which of these callbacks are mandatory ?.. is this documented
somewhere or reading the code is the only option?
