The distro probably renamed wlan0 because its udev rules are (or were)
old.  For a while, the udev persistent-net support renamed everything to
ethX, whether the initial interface's name was ethX or not.  I think
this has been fixed for a while, but it's possible that either the old
name stuck, or the version of udev in use still has rules that had this
issue.

Archana: If you do have an interface whose MAC matches the MAC of the
wifi0 interface, then try editing your distro's generated persistent-net
udev rule file (I'm not sure which file it is, but it'll have comments
in it about "write_net_rules") to name that interface wlan0 instead of
whatever it is now.  Or, wherever you read "wlan0", think whatever your
distro renamed your higher-level interface to; either way should work.
