Yes, it will not work if the interface is a bridge.

Yes. I also had to "brctl setfd br0 0" to turn off the forwarding delay, 
otherwise there are problems during reassocation after the connection is 
lost.

I'm using wpa_supplicant 0.5.3, hostapd 0.4.8, madwifi_ng r1472 
(20060311).
