Answering part of my own question:

I have since found that reason code 2 is called 
WLAN_REASON_PREV_AUTH_NOT_VALID . I however still don't understand why 
it is being invoked (e.g. assuming that this means that the previous 
authentication is not valid, what's invalid about it?).
