Using Infrastructure and Ad-Hoc networks

Hi,

from studying the wpa_supplicant documentation i understand that
one must use ap_scan=2 for ad-hoc networks. Is there a technical reason
for that or is it a design decision (no automatic selection of
ad-hoc networks)?

Is there any way to switch between ad-hoc and infrastructure networks
without restarting the wpa_supplicant?
