That is not needed.

You should use wlan0, not wifi0 as the interface.

Linux 2.6.14 changes some of the wireless extensions events in
uncompatible way and wpa_supplicant 0.3.8 does not have matching
changes. You will either need to update to the current 0.3.x snapshot or
to the latest 0.4.x version to work with Linux 2.6.14.

This is caused by the difference in Linux 2.6.14 (WE-19) events.
