Using hostapd, xsupplicant on a local machine

I am trying to get hostapd and xsupplicant working together on the same 
machine.  I assume that I should set this up as if it were a wired network.  
As far as I can tell, all of my config files look OK, but xsupplicant is not 
able to connect.  Are there any pitfalls here that I should be aware of?  I 
am running hostapd 0.4.2 and xsupplicant 1.2pre1 on Linux 2.4.27.
