connectplus on au1x00 says "Interrupt, but dev not OK"

When I plug my Sandisk ConnectPlus card (SDWCFB-128-768) in, it says

kernel: wifi0: Interrupt, but dev not OK

a lot.  And by "a lot", I mean

kernel: NET: 3067338 messages suppressed.

The system seems to be entirely unresponsive, doing nothing but logging
that and "messages suppressed" warnings until I pull the card.

This happens with both hostap 0.3.7 and 0.4.1.
Kernel is 2.4.31 (linux-mips.org CVS plus ppopov/2.4/64bit_pcmcia.patch)
running on an xxs1500 (au1500 mipsel), cross-compiled with gcc 3.4.3.

Here's the log.  I think the errors in the latter half are just a result
of things trying to run after the card has been removed:
