Authenticate an AP

I have this setup where I have a number of APs running hostap/hostapd
0.3.7.  I want APs to establish WDS links with each other only after they
authenticate to one another.  Is it possible at all to do 802.1X
authentication between APs (i.e. cards running in master mode)?

If not, if I authenticate a client to an AP using 802.1X and then the
client switches modes from managed to master (acts as an AP).  Is it
possible to maintain the authentication state?
