I'm not sure it's the wpa_supplicant debian package's fault.
There's a bug in ipw drivers that cause WPA support not to be compiled 
when they're built as a module inside the kernel tree. Maybe this is the 
case. Remove all CONFIG_IPW2100 and CONFIG_IEE80211_ options from the 
.config in your kernel, and build the driver externally.
