Yes, might be.  In mid-2003 and earlier, various refs on the list
discussed firmware either 1.3.4 or 1.3.6 and earlier showing issues
with much packet-dropping.

When I took my off-the-shelf 1.3.4 card and flashed to 1.4.9, I had
a vast performance/throughput improvement (like, to rates that
would be expected).  Use 1.7.4 now.  There has been some more recent
discussion about 1.8.0 (for example) also exhibiting some bugginess,
though I don't recall what.

Suggest trying to flash to 1.7.4 and see how you like that.
