Connection rates

I find my connection rates quite eratic, anything between 2Mbps and
11Mbps, and the way they interact with 'iwconfig rate' is quite
bizarre.

eg, I can have iwconfig report a rate of 2Mbps, then type

	iwconfig wifi0 rate 5.5mbps

and have the reported rate jump up to 11Mbps....

Generally the rate tends to sit at 2Mbps most of the time, even when
the NIC is close to the AP and regardless of the rate I select.  Could
be faulty hardware of course :-(

The NIC is in managed mode, the AP is an 802.11g AP, if that's
relevent...

Any thoughts?
