This option means that you downloaded the sources for pcmcia
and compiled and installed them yourself. If you don't
remember doing that you probably have the kernel modules. ;-)
Generally you would use the separate sources if you want the new
versions of the pcmcia drivers, either for bug fixes, or because a pc
card driver that you need has not made it into the kernel source tree
yet.
If you use the external code but build hostap against the internal
kernel source code instead there could incompatibilities.
