Problem bringing up Netgear WG511 interface

I believe this is a timing issue - I have got something very similar
with a Linksys card.
Currently what I am doing is running it without DHCP and putting a
static IP address on the card and it works!! Bring up the wireless
interface first (ifconfig wlan0 up or similar) and then start
wpa_supplicant.
I've experimented with the -w option but that doesn't help....
I want to experiment further and will tell you if I then get success
