I forgot to mention a couple of things ...

During these 30 seconds, the following extra lines appear in the
wpa_supplicant window:

RTM_NEWLINK, IFLA_IFNAME: Interface 'wlan0' added
l2_packet_receive - recv: Network is down
RTM_NEWLINK, IFLA_IFNAME: Interface 'wlan0' added

And after pump has exited, ifconfig now reports that the interface is down:

root at laruns:/etc# ifconfig -a
...
wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:09:5B:EF:34:47
           BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
           RX packets:15 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
           TX packets:64 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
           collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
           RX bytes:1975 (1.9 KiB) TX bytes:11913 (11.6 KiB)
           Interrupt:11 Memory:10400000-10401fff

Finally, the green light on the Netgear card flashes occasionally
throughout, but is mostly off.

	Neil
