IEEE802.1x autehtication

hello to everybody,
       I am trying to find out the  process of supplicant authentication 
using hostap and freeRADIUS server.The authentication method used is EAP-MD5.
Can anybody explore this.

       I have read from somewhare that to start EAP requests and 
responses ,the access point opens an "unauthorized port" and after access-
accept from RADIUS server the port becomes "authorized" .is that true? What 
is actually meaning of this change in state of port?

        Can anybody knows location of code for above mentioned states of port?

I would appreciate if somebody would help me.
