question setting hostap: no such device

hi,

i am new to hostap and i have problems making it work. i have
successfully compiled and loaded kernel modules.  when i do 

# ifconfig wlan0 up
wlan0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
# lsmod

i put alias wlan0 hostap_cs in modules.conf. what should i do to
start it up?

btw, can hostap operates in normal station mode and have PSM on?
any help will be greatly appreciated.
