hostap doesn't understand wireless commands

This sounds like a bug in the driver. If you check kernel log with
'dmesg', I would guess that you will find lot of error messages about
command completion etc. In practice, the card/driver combination is
pretty confused at that point and hard reseting the card is more or less
the only way to continue. I think I have broken something with the
command completion handling, but I'm not completely sure what..

At least I have now been able to duplicate this semi-randomly. I think
that PCI-based cards on some host systems have much more problems and
some cards seem to work fine. I would assume this is somewhat timing
sensitive etc. Anyway, I'll try to find and fix the real problem that
is confusing command completion handling.
