Shutdown wlan interface

hi,

Is there any way to shutdown the wlan interface, ie stop consuming power, by
issuing a command.

iwconfig does not have a "down" option.

I dont want to plug in and plug out the card for that purpose. I tried
ifconfig wlan0 down

But the activity indicator of the card still is blinking.
