HostAP + SMC 2632W

Hi,
I'm trying to setup the HostAP driver (v. 2002-10-12) for my SMC 2632W card
on my laptop.
I'm
running linux kernel 2.4.20 (patched to Wireless Extensions v15): whenever I
insert the card, the driver fails initialization producing this output:

 After that, running ifconfig -a gives:

It seems like driver fails in querying the card firmware; using the wlan-ng
driver gives similar results: system freezes until card release and dmesg
gives:

What might be the error: card firmware, system settings (irq, I/O ports,
...), pcmcia subsystem or driver ?
