I presume that's the difference between using Flash player + whatever
optimisations the BBC have created and using rtmpdump. I've seen the
BBC player hiccup numerous times, so even it isn't immune.

You can try --rtmp-tv-opts and --rtmp-radio-opts to set additional
parameters for rtmpdump, i.e., bump the timeout or buffer capacity. I
can't say it ever helped me, though.
