If you take the plunge and find you have any questions, feel free to
start a new thread here. Creating a portable installation may not
involve much more than creating a new wrapper script for get_iplayer.
If you package your installation with a pre-populated profile directory
and a wrapper script that knows to use it, that could be enough. Users
would still have to configure the output directory somehow, but that
could be accomplished with an auxiliary script of some kind.

If you're looking to cut down the size of a portable installation, you
can strip out the unnecessary files from the helper apps. There is some
fat there, particularly in VLC. I tested a self-contained installer
with stripped-down helper apps and it worked fine.

FWIW, I would suggest first trying the Web PVR Manager. Here again, it
may only require a new wrapper script and a few pre-populated
configuration options to run in a portable installation. Not as smooth
as a native gui, but people seem to use it pretty effectively. If you
do roll your own, you may be able to get some clues from the Web PVR
source re: how to invoke get_iplayer to service the various gui actions.
