I note that the aactomp3 option specifies CBR 128kb.
I'd like to be able to use VBR instead of CBR and to be able to set up
which -V mode to use via a pref.

Before I spend any time working on this, is this something anyone else
would like to see or are most people happy with 128kb CBR?
